Canine Distemper Notice Issued

Canine distemper virus is on the rise in Florida, putting unvaccinated pet dogs and shelter populations at greater risk, researchers said.  Swabs from five wild raccoons and a fox were sent to a lab to screen for a variety of respiratory diseases.  Julie Levy, DVM, Ph.D., director of the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida, said the samples came back positive for canine distemper.

“Once a dog is infected with the virus, there is no effective treatment,” Dr. Levy said.  Hundreds of dogs died recently in Florida because of distemper outbreaks.
